Polygamist Fashion: Spring 09

Nick Verreos Predicts Marc Jacobs Spring 2009?

Lord knows fashion ideas and inspiration can come to designers in strange places, including the national headlines. Case in point: Polygamist Fashion? This last week, I have received several emails and read some articles (from serious news sources) suggesting the possibility of how the austere, 19th Century-inspired Little-House-On-The-Prarie fashions might be influencing designers designing next year's Spring 2009 collections. I immediately remembered my February 2008 issue of Vogue Italia and the fabulous Steven Meisel shoot titled "Country Style". So, here I juxtaposed the real polygamist women with the Eastern European 16 year-old supermodels giving "Big Love" chic from that editorial. See if you can tell which is which:

Consequently, I also made a couple of "mental fashion notes" regarding the somber dresses these women were wearing. First, I could totally see Marc Jacobs doing his next collection based on them even though it does seem way too predictable for Jacobs.

The second thing that came to mind was how much these dresses reminded me of the "Basic Block" muslin dresses with shirt collars that we instructors ask our students at FIDM to make for their beginning sewing, draping and pattern drafting projects. Students always think they will be making these fabulous Couture one-shouldered gowns and end up making garments very similar to these. Now I can tell the students how actually "fashionable" these basic dresses are (or will be).

UPDATE: Tim Gunn gives his take on Polygamist Fashion and agrees that we might see it on Marc Jacobs Runway!

I haven't sewed clothing in over 10 years, but grew up doing so - my grandmother and her 2 sisters were professional seamstresses and tailors, and taught me how to do "the right way" for everything. When you say that the basic muslin dress is how you start, it TOTALLY is - because once you know how to draft that, and how to modify it, you can start on anything! The skill involved in set-in collars and sleeves isn't trivial, and is neglected by so many today. Garment fit via tailoring can elevate a homemade dress.

I find this hysterical! Enjoyable read and you are probably RIGHT ON THE MONEY. I am waiting for Marc to send milkmaids down the catwalk in September. You've also convinced me that it may be time to move to Paris after all! America.... going to the cows.
