The
Annual Costume Institute Gala occurred earlier in the week in New York City. This event is always a treat, in terms of what the top designers, their muses, models, and attached-at-the-hip fashionsitas end up wearing to walk up the iconic Metropolitan Museum steps. Remember that photo from a couple of years back of actress
Sarah Jessica Parker and designer
Alexander McQueen in Tartan Couture for the "Brittania" opening? I still get shivers of joy thinking about it. The theme of this year's gala (and exhibit) was
Superheros. The red carpet parade of fashion was worthy of the old-school Oscar days of seeing the likes of
Bjork and
Cher busting out some
Crazy Couture. Trust me there were some serious messes. Most of which coming from what the actual designers wore (Hello
Vera Wang and
Donna Karan!) but I want to concentrate here on three of my favorites:
The
DIVINE Miss Anna Wintour. At first, when I saw this photo, I exclaimed a loud "No she DIDN'T!". Oh yeah, she DID!! And we thought that gold bolero
Jennifer Hudson wore to the Academy Awards two years ago was
Lieutenant Uhura! The shell-shaped padded hips, the cone-like face-framing jacket detail, the raw-edged silk organza sides: The entire
Chanel Haute Couture gown was from another planet. The planet of
WintourPluto. And I want to live on that planet! I thought it was fabulous. Only Miss Anna, and a handful of A-list Drag Queens, could get away with. Also, knowing that she was the event's Co-Chairperson, along with
Giorgio Armani, I wonder if the fact that she chose to
NOT wear
Armani was a slight slap in the face.
Another stunner, in my eyes, was
Christina Ricci, who overtly vibed
Wonder Woman, in a
Givenchy Haute Couture red and pink-colored silk satin bustier gown with layers of chiffon. Her coy look of "I am about to start turning around and change into another outfit" was icing on her Couture cake!
Finally, I thought actress
Eva Longoria looked like a
Spanish Contessa in this deep violet gown by
Marchesa. I just wanted to place a Mantilla comb with a train of lace atop her coiffed hair and make her dance some flamenco on those Metropolitan steps!
"Hola" magazine is going to LOVE this look, I assure you. As we say in Latin America:
Divina.
